This is becoming a billion dollar industry, but you can get started on your own with very little money.

There are several different ways to do this business, the most popular being to have people bring their cars and drop them off at your house and then work on them in your spare time or full time if this is your full-time business.

Another way is to set up a small shop in a visible retail area and have people drop their cars off to be detailed. You might keep in mind that as your business grows you may need more room. Many times people start out detailing businesses, by themselves and wind up with so much business that they have to hire people to help them. Then space becomes an issue.

 Mobil auto detailing is also a very viable option.

This is where you take all of your supplies and equipment and go to the customer’s home or place of business and detail the cars. How you run your business is up to you and depends largely on whether or not you have room at home, retail space available in your area and customer needs.

 Their are many theories on how to detail a car but suffice it to say that it’s going to take you between three and four hours to do the average car. We will get some of that in just a little bit.

How much to charge

 The prices you charge will vary according to the area in which you live. The way to determine your price is to call some detailing businesses and very simply just ask them is much they charge. The way to do this is just describe your own car to find out how much they would charge you.

 One thing you might want to consider is an auto detailing franchise but that would involve spending more money to get started but the advantage to a franchise is that they would train you and teach you how to get new business. The purpose of this article however is for people who want to start it on their own with little or no money and this you can do.

 To get your business started set your price per car $20-$30 lower than the average until your schedule is full of cars to be detailed. Then raise your rates, but still keep them competitive. Also, put a sign on the side of your car or truck or van that says auto detailing, low rates and your cell phone number. Put your ad on some of the free sites and perhaps an ad in the newspaper, but make sure they say the same thing as your sign. Jimmy says always use the word low rates because this will cause you to get the phone calls over 10 other people advertising in the same place. Make sure you have your cell phone with you so you can answer the call right now. If you don’t answer that phone the first time it rings they will call somebody else and you lose the business.

Where to start

 A good place to get your business started is the used car lots. I spent a lot of years in the car business and trying to find someone to detail cars for us was always an issue. Go in and talk to the used car manager (I used to be one) and just asked him to give you a try. The used car manager has two concerns, he wants the cars to look nice and he wants the price to be low. If you can do both of these things you can get some of his business or maybe all of it.

 Auto detailing equipment:

You’re going to need a wash bucket, spray bottles for your glass cleaner washing mitts, sponges, a shop vac, a rug steam cleaner, a buffer, and if possible a small power washer.

 How to detail a car:

 Detailing a car engine is the first step and for this you need a heavy-duty degreaser or you can use kerosene mixed 50-50 with water. Start your process with the engine warm and apply your degreaser to the engine and then use a brush to get deposits off of the valve covers and the rest of the engine. Then rinse with your power washer or hose if you don’t have one. Spray everything in the engine accept the belts with silicone and this will give it a nice shiny look.

 Wash the car using good car soap. The best way is to start with the rims and then start washing from the top and work your way down and also do the doorjambs. After the car dries, use something like Armor All on the tires and wipe them real nice because people like the way this looks.

 Open the car doors up and let’s get started vacuuming out the vehicle. You’re going you need a good all-purpose cleaner to get the stains off. Clean everything even the steering wheel and then vacuum out the trunk. Now we need to shampoo the interior with a good carpet shampoo. The interior can be a real bear to get clean but you just have to stick with it until it looks nice. Sometimes you may need to shampoo the trunk as well.

 Now, let’s clean the windows and then we are done. I like to use a good glass cleaner and paper towels. Not hard but make sure your windows don’t have any streaks.

 Most car detailing jobs include waxing the car. The way to do this is use a good car wax, put it on and wipe it off. I always say don’t make it easy job hard.
