Read this before you buy auto insurance if you want to save money. The easy steps described here can make a big difference in how much you pay.

The first thing to do is to decide how much in auto insurance you need to buy and by that I mean what are the liability requirements for your state. This is a good place to start. Many states require $50,000 bodily injury per person and $100,000 total for all people injured in an accident. Keep in mind that if there is an accident, which is your fault the other people will go after your net worth. Therefore if your net worth is $500,000 it might be a good idea to attach a personal liability policy in the amount of $1 million.

Years ago, I had personal liability insurance policy in the amount of $1 million when an accident, occurred on some property that I owned. Because of that policy, legal counsel was provided and everything was taken care of for me.

If you have no appreciable net worth at this point in your life you will be deemed to be judgment proof and therefore lawyers will not sue you over and above the amount of damage caused in the accident, which is covered by the insurance policy.

Next, get all your records together, including records on past accidents, driving records and your current car insurance policy. It might be a good idea if you have had points deducted, to wait until the points have been reinstated to apply for a new auto insurance policy.

Now go online and fill out applications with at least five different companies and in a day or so you will have quotes.

Now call several insurance agents and insurance brokers in your area and asked them for quotes making sure that you have all your records with you when you make the call. Ask them to e-mail the quotes for you.

After you receive the quotes, narrow all your choices down to three companies and then visit the department of insurance for your state online and check out the companies, including any consumer complaints.

Now after spending between one and two hours working on car insurance quotes you are in a position to make a decision..
