Step 1. Check for discounts.

Many insurance companies are now advertising that they specialize in discount auto insurance and some of them actually do. The good thing about this advertising is that in order for other insurance companies to keep up they must bring their prices down in order to be competitive.

Many times discounts are available if you have a good driving record, if you have had drivers training, if you have an alarm system on your car, airbags installed and are driving a four-door sedan.

Step 2 Select a higher insurance deductible

Are you planning on having an accident, of course not? Why not raise your insurance deductible and become eligible for lower rates. Insurance is meant as protection against a catastrophic event. Raising your deductible from $250 to $1000 would save you hundreds of dollars per year on your insurance and you would still be protected from losing your life savings should there be an accident.

I do not concern myself too much about the $750 difference in the deductible as long as I am in compliance with the law on car insurance and am protected in the event of an accident.

Step 3. Reduce coverage on older vehicles

If you’re driving an older car that is paid for why not drop the collision on your policy. In most states you are only required to carry liability insurance and paying for collision insurance on a car that is not worth very much doesn’t make any sense and is a waste of money.

Step 4 Shop shop shop

Take the time to shop online for your auto insurance, getting quotes on premiums from several different insurance companies and you will be sure to get the lowest price and the best coverage. However, make sure the policy that you do decide on it being provided for by a company who will take care of things for you should you have an accident.

The best way to evaluate insurance companies is go to an auto body shop and talk to the manager. He will tell you which auto insurance companies provide the best service.
