Many people will shop for life insurance before assessing their needs. That is like going to the grocery store without a list. I never do that; at least I always know what I want to buy before I go into a store. Mary on the other hand, will shop until she finds something she likes and then she will buy it. This is fine when you’re looking for clothes, but is not a good idea when you are shopping for life insurance.

The first thing to do is to decide how much coverage you need. In order to do this you’ll have to sit down and make a list of all of your debts, outstanding mortgage, cost of children’s education, tax bills and future tax bills, plus anything else you can think of. Add all of these and come up with a grand total.

If you are the primary wage earner in the household take your net income, (your income after taxes) and multiply it times seven and write down this total.

Take the two totals, add them together and now you have a rough idea of how much life insurance you need.

Now that you know where you’re at how and much life insurance you need, go online and pick out five life insurance companies and fill out applications for a five-year term life insurance policy. They will get back to you usually within 24 hours with a quote and terms.

Take all five of your quotes from the different companies and check the ratings on the companies to decide which companies are dependable and then make a decision.
