Read this if you want to get the cheapest auto insurance rates because every company is different, but you can save money if you know how.

I am a firm believer in taking a little extra time to save a lot of money and that is especially true when it comes to shopping for car insurance. It makes no sense to me to pay more than is necessary to get good coverage.

Before you start shopping here’s a quick checklist of things that will make a difference in the cost of your premiums.

Number 1. Check your current insurance policy to find out how much you are paying in premiums. I would have to look up how much I am paying right now in premiums because the truth of the matter is we write a check every three months and I don’t pay a lot of attention to the amount. If I was interested in changing insurance companies I would have that information in front of me before I start.

Number 2. Do some research to determine the insurance requirements in your state. Different states have different requirements.

Number 3. Take into consideration your net worth and if you have considerable net worth make sure that you attach a personal liability insurance policy in the amount of at least $1 million.

Number 4. Review your driving record and if you have any recent tickets or points deducted from your drivers license it might be a good idea to wait on buying a new insurance policy.

Number 5. Make a list of clubs and organizations you belong to as membership in some of these clubs may qualify you for discounts.

Number 6. Now go online and using all this information you have accumulated, get quotes from at least five insurance companies and you will be in a position to make an educated decision and save money on your car insurance.
