Are you the type of person who keeps things neat and organized? Does your clothes closet always look like it has just been rearranged everything has been put away in it’s proper place. Do people who see your closet say, I wish my closet look like this? If the answers to these three questions are yes you may have a career waiting for you as a closet organizer.
You would be amazed at the number of people who would actually pay somebody to come into their house and straighten out and organize their closet. And furthermore if they were happy with the way that you straighten out their closet they will tell their friends to call you. Messy people seem to know other messy people. They would also find themselves calling you at regular intervals to come back and reorganize their closet so is also a repeat business.
The biggest part of your job as a closet organizer will be to edit the wardrobe of your clients, that is to take a look at their clothes and assess what they wear most, what they wear least and what they don’t wear at all anymore. Most people will take up half the space in their closet with clothes that they do not even wear. Get a large box and pack up the clothes that they have not worn in a year or more as well as clothes that do not fit anymore because they’ve either gained weight or lost weight and donate these clothes to the nearest Goodwill store, or if they have sentimental value box them up to be stored.
Now you have room to work with. With these clothes removed, your client will be amazed at how much better the closet looks already.
If you’re living in an area of the country that has four seasons, organize the clothes giving priority to what is being worn now. If it is summertime, put all of the summer clothes toward the front with the fall clothes being next followed by winter and spring. How easy is that?
Organized and hang garments by type and color. Keep the outfits together as this will speed up their getting ready time in the morning and then hang all the blouses together, all the pants together, all the dresses together and so on.
Set up zones. Use the low rods for tops and skirts, I’ll ride for dresses and the high bar for suits and outfits.
Use garment bags to protect expensive suits dresses and jacket. Do not use plastic.
Everything that doesn’t hang should be put in a container or drawer, such as socks undergarments.
Setup a system for shoes. The easiest method is a shoe rack on the floor.
Now that you know how to do this you need to find customers. Put a small ad in the Yellow Pages, which says closet organizing, low rates and your cell phone number. Get a magnetic sign put on your car or van, which says the same thing, emphasizing low rates. Another way to start is to take out a 1″ x 1 column add in the style section of the newspaper. This ad should also read closet organizing, low rates and your cell phone number. It won’t be long and you will have business.
