People who know how to travel and how to book cruises and who also know what to do during the cruises can save a lot of money during the cruises. Below is a list of nine ways to save money which will make your cruise much more pleasant. The more money you save on your cruises the more cruises you can take.

Number 1. Negotiate. Most people do not know that you can actually negotiate a price for your cruise. Start out by offering the cruise company one half the asking price and act like you are only partially interested in actually taking the cruise.

Number 2. Look for discounts and ask for discounts. Many cruise companies offer discounts for different groups of people such as seniors, military personnel, government workers, police officers and firemen and maybe even the group that you belong to. If you look hard enough you will find a reason to get a discount.

Number 3. Cruise free. If you can bring a group of people with you, you may get a free cruise or at the very least a huge discount. If you can teach a class, conduct lectures or if you’re a nice looking gentleman and know how to dance you may get yourself a free cruise if you will agree to dance with the ladies. Tough job, but somebody has to do it.

Number 4. Buy your own shore excursion package from the excursion company yourself. If you buy them from the cruise line they will tack on extra costs.

Number 5. Do not use the ship to shore phones. Use your own cell phone or buy a calling card and use it while you’re in the ports.

Number 6. Book an inside cabin. You are not going to spend much time in your cabin anyway and many times you can get an upgrade at the last minute and wind up with a very nice ocean view for the inside cabin price.

Number 7. If you’re going to use the spa, go while the ship is in port and save 50% on your spa treatments.

Number 8. Book your next cruise while you’re on a cruise. The company will usually offer you a very nice discount if you will book another cruise with them before you get back to port.

Number 9. Do not book your airfare as part of the travel package through the cruise line. See my article on buying low-cost airfares and do it separately.
