If you have experience in sales, marketing or accounting and a general knowledge of how large business run, you are qualified to be a business development manager. Most business development managers have a degree in business and some have an MBA but the truth of the matter, the most important thing is can you sell.

What the business development manager does is to develop new business for his company and what that entails is finding new clients and selling them on the advantages of doing business with your company. This will involve a lot of cold calling and knocking on doors, so to speak, to find new clients.

This job can either be done 9 to 5 in a corporate office or can be done from your home, as you will spend most of your time on the telephone and your computer or out visiting prospective clients.

You must not only have an in-depth knowledge of the company you work for but you should also know the product and situation of companies you are soliciting for new business. Executives like to talk to people who understand their business and you will not get far unless you know exactly what they do and how they do it.

Many times a business development manager will turn the new client over to an account manager in a particular department within his company who will nurture the relationship with the new client, once it has been established.

Depending on the relationship with the new client and depending on the importance of the new client to the company, the business development manager may function as the account manager for the client.

The salary for this job depends on your ability to attract new business. New businesses are the lifeblood of any company and people who can attract new clients are paid very well.
