The key to finding travel deals at the last minute is persistence. You are going to have to do a lot of comparison searching but if you know how to use the search engines this can be done in a relatively short period of time.

Start out by looking at the travel booking sites because many times they have special offers that they make available and these can vary from month-to-month, week-to-week, or even day-to-day. There may be an incredible deal sitting on one of these sites today that was not there yesterday.

I always tell people to look in the travel section of the Sunday newspaper. Travel agencies and booking sites will usually only pay for printed ads when they are offering special programs and deals and they know that a large percentage of older travelers do not have Internet access.

Call a couple of local travel agents, especially if you’re interested in a popular resort. Many times travel agencies, even small local agencies will receive a block of discounted packages to places like Las Vegas, Atlantic City and New York and they must sell them or is some cases eat them so they can get real movated to make good last minute travel deals.

Check with discount tour operators, as many times you can also get a complete package from them at a discounted rate.

Leave your name and e-mail address with a select group of travel sites and agencies and ask to be notified about special trips and areas of interest to you.

When considering an area look online for directories of available lodging in that area. Type the name of the area into the search engine along with “lodging directories” in quotation marks and see what happens. All of a sudden you will have lots of accommodations to choose from. Keep in mind that when it comes to these privately owned lodges the owners will oftentimes negotiate the price depending on whether it is in season or out of season. If they have a cabin that has not been booked for the weekend and you happen to be calling on Wednesday or Thursday you may get a great price.
