Having insurance on your car keeps you protected financially if your vehicle is damaged in an accident and also protects you if you are sued following an accident that may or may not have been your fault.

The trick is to pay as little as possible for the best insurance coverage available.

Here are some tips to saving money on your car insurance.

Number 1. If possible, do what I do and combine your homeowners insurance and your auto insurance with the same company. I get letters in the mail every day from auto insurance companies who want to lower my premiums but nobody can match the price I have now because I have both homeowners insurance and auto insurance with the same company.

Number 2. Ask for higher deductible. You can save hundreds of dollars every year if you get $1000 deductible as opposed to $250 deductible, which most people do. The reason we have insurance is to protect against a catastrophic accident and I will gladly take my chances with a higher deductible to get lower premiums.

Number 3. Ask for discounts. You will be amazed at how many different types of discounts are available. Discounts for being a senior, or a veteran, are having a good driving record, or driving a limited number of miles per year, or something as simple as driving a four-door sedan automobile.

Number 4. Shop around. The best way to do is go online and check with five different companies and get the prices before you make a decision. You would be amazed that with everything being equal, the prices are different with every company that you get a quote from.
