My first book which bears the same title as this article was a delight to write. It is the culmination of years of study and preaching, praying and listening. The mass of the book was written in a one room cabin in eastern west Texas as I took a few days to rest and pray. I did not plan to write, but just rest. Rather than tout my own work, I will borrow the review written by a fellow pastor and friend. Over the years we have had many lively debates about the Word of God and I know John to be a seeker of truth. He is also a great student of the Word. For him to write this review is such a way is truly to give much honor to my book. Here is his review:
Who? What? When? Where? Why? These are five questions that most people have asked themselves more than one time in their lives. Who am I really? What is the reason for my existence? When will I discover my purpose in life? Where are all the events of life taking me? Why was I even born? There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking these questions. And, believe it or not, there are answers to all of them.
In the book The Eternal Purpose of God – The Why of Who You Are, Pastor Howard Cameron explores biblical answers to at least the “why” questions, if not several of the other “W Questions” as well. Why was man really placed upon the earth? What is man’s true purpose? From the beginning of Scripture in the book of Genesis, a solid biblical foundation is laid in this book for the true answers to these questions. This book proves from scripture that God created man for a specific purpose.
God had and still has plans for all of mankind as a whole and for you as a specific person. This book will help you come to a fuller understanding of why the Father placed you upon earth. Through numerous biblical references a path is presented to not only help you understand why you are here, but to help you begin to walk down that path to the fulfillment of the purpose God has planned for you.
As well as answering the question of why we exist, Pastor Cameron also lays a very thought provoking concept concerning Jehovah. Who was the “God” who created the heavens and the earth? Who was the God who walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the evening? Who was the God who came and visited men in the Old Testament? If you are one who studies the Word of God, you will find it extremely interesting and it may even challenge you to do some digging into the Word for deeper understanding.
I enjoyed reading this book written by my Good Friend. I recommend this book for those who are searching for answers to the “Why” in their lives. I can also recommend it as a refresher read for those who already believe they have found the answer to the “Why” of their walk with God but who simply want to reestablish and reaffirm the answers they have found. This book was written to show the reader what scripture tells us but often the scholars did not or would not. I have used scripture to demonstrate what seems to be obvious once you’ve seen it. For example, Jesus said that “no man has ever seen the Father….” (John 6:46) echoing John 1:18. Consequently, the numerous appearances of God in the Old Testament must be someone other than Father God. In that same vein, Jesus said in John 8:56 that Abraham saw His day. I wanted to know when, if that were so. My book reveals that answer as well.
The central theme is about why God created man, therefore why He created you. We have seen many attempts to answer that most basic of questions, but I have yet to find one that went back to the beginning to discover the answer. I believe that one of the most important achievements of this book is the connecting together in one coherent stream the purpose of God in creating man which has never changed and is forming our lives even today. His Purpose is the same today as “in the beginning” and discovering and embracing that truth will cause the reader to approach life in a much more proactive way producing a much more satisfying life and an infinitely more wonderful future.
