There are several different ways to do this but I have outlined a very simple method of getting started.

Step number 1.  The most important aspect of a direct sales business is choosing a product to sell. You’re way ahead of the game if you choose a product that you enjoy using yourself and that you would have no hesitation to recommend to your family and friends. The key to selling anything is to first be sold on the product yourself.

Step number 2. Go online and search for direct sales companies, of which there are thousands, and find the product or products that you are interested in selling. In all likelihood you will find several companies will offer the same product. The best thing to do is contact the top 4 or 5 companies and speak directly to the person in charge of direct sales for that product.

Step number 3.  Ask about the commission rates, warranty programs and sales support. Make sure that you have a person in the company that you can go to any time with any questions or concerns.

Step number 4.  Set up a website which is SEO optimized so people can find you and your product. There are many inexpensive ways to do this and just starting out all you need is what is called a landing page which is a one-page website which will give people who are looking for you and your product the basic information. You can set up an order form on this page for the product along with a merchant account to accept credit cards. Also customers feel better just knowing that you have a website so this will enhance your credibility.

Step number 5.  If you’re going to sell your product out of your home to your family and friends and people you meet you are going to need an inventory. The best way to start out with your inventory is to order samples of each of the products and as you take orders from customers order the product. As you grow and prosper you will be able to keep enough product so that you can do immediate delivery on your sales. This will increase your sales, as people like to have the product in their hands when they buy it.

Step 6.  If you’re going to exclusively sell your product online you will not need samples and you will not need to keep an inventory. A note of caution, selling products online requires a product to be something that people will buy without looking at directly and touching. The way to determine which products fit this category is to look in catalogs. The only products advertised in catalogs are products that people will buy without seeing and touching. Catalog people already done the research on this, so let them be your guide and you won’t have to make your own mistakes.
